About Border Terrier
The Border Terrier, originally bred in the rugged borderlands between England and Scotland, combines the courage of a working terrier with the affectionate nature of a companion dog. Recognised for their distinct otter-shaped head, wiry coat, and sturdy build, these small yet determined dogs were once bred to assist in fox and vermin control — a task they performed with impressive tenacity. Their dense double coat, available in shades such as red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten, offers protection from harsh weather, making them suitable for Ireland’s climate. Despite their compact size, Border Terriers are energetic, clever, and highly affectionate. They form strong bonds with their families and are known for being excellent with children and other pets when properly socialised. Border Terriers thrive in active homes where they can enjoy regular walks, playtime, and companionship. While they love to dig and explore — a trait from their hunting heritage — they’re also happy to settle beside their owners after a busy day.
