About Glen of Imaal Terrier
The Glen of Imaal Terrier, also known as the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier or Wicklow Terrier, is a native Irish breed originating from County Wicklow. Once a prized working and hunting dog, the Glen was valued for its determination, courage, and loyalty. Though now listed as one of the Kennel Club’s vulnerable native breeds due to its rarity, this sturdy little terrier remains a national treasure of Ireland. Compact yet powerful, the Glen of Imaal Terrier has a distinctive low-slung body, strong legs, and a double coat that protects it from harsh weather. Their expressive eyes and gentle nature make them particularly endearing companions. While originally bred for hunting vermin and small game, Glens are known today for their affectionate, calm temperament, making them wonderful family dogs. They are intelligent, brave, and loyal — a combination that allows them to transition seamlessly from working dog to devoted companion. With proper socialisation, they get along well with children and other pets and enjoy being active members of family life.
