Information

Highly intelligent and task-oriented, the Deutscher Wachtelhund thrives with experienced, active owners. Though friendly, it’s reserved with strangers and may show strong prey drive around small animals. Early training and socialization are essential for balance and control.

Overview

The Deutscher Wachtelhund, or German Quail Dog, is a rare, all-purpose hunting breed from Germany. Developed primarily for forest game hunting, it is especially skilled at tracking and flushing. With traits from spaniels and retrievers, it’s a true working dog—driven, athletic, and bonded to its handler.

Medium-sized and muscular, this breed has a wavy, weather-resistant brown or roan coat and expressive eyes. Loyal and affectionate with family, Wachtelhunds are happiest when they have regular access to nature and a job to do.
