Information

Clumber Spaniels are affectionate, devoted, and generally quiet. They form strong bonds with their families and are typically good with children and other pets. While not hyperactive, they do require daily exercise to stay fit and content. They may be stubborn during training but respond well to gentle consistency.

Their dense, medium-length coat sheds moderately and needs regular brushing. They are known to drool and snore, and their long ears and heavy bodies require basic maintenance to avoid health issues.

Overview

The Clumber Spaniel is the largest of the spaniel breeds, developed in England for flushing and retrieving game through thick cover. Unlike more energetic spaniels, the Clumber is calm, deliberate, and composed—yet still very capable in the field.

With a broad head, heavy bone, and low-set body, the Clumber has a distinctive look. Its soft white coat, accented with lemon or orange markings, and soulful eyes add to its endearing charm. Though slower than its cousins, it is methodical, determined, and surprisingly agile for its size.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Prone to joint issues, eye conditions, and weight gain. Monitor for hip dysplasia and maintain healthy body condition. Clean ears weekly.
Grooming
Brush 2–3 times per week to control shedding. Bathe regularly. Clean eyes and ears, and trim feet and feathering to avoid mats.
Exercise
Needs daily walks and moderate play. Enjoys sniffing, retrieving, and steady activity. Avoid high-impact exercise in puppies.
Training
Smart but can be stubborn. Responds to calm, patient training with food rewards. Early socialization improves responsiveness.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality diet for medium-to-large breeds. Watch portions to avoid obesity, which can strain joints.
