LIFE SPAN

Information

Catahoulas are highly intelligent and energetic, but they are not for novice dog owners. They require strong leadership, early socialization, and consistent training. Without firm guidance and enough mental and physical activity, they may become destructive, territorial, or dog-aggressive.

Their short coat is easy to care for, and they’re generally healthy, though some lines may carry deafness or hip dysplasia. Catahoulas thrive in homes with space, structure, and experienced handlers who understand their intense drive.

Overview

The Catahoula Leopard Dog, also called the Louisiana Catahoula, is the official state dog of Louisiana. Bred for hunting wild hogs and managing livestock in swamps and forests, this breed is powerful, focused, and capable of thinking independently in high-pressure situations.

Named for Catahoula Parish, this dog stands out with its muscular frame, piercing eyes (often "glass" or multicolored), and leopard-like merle coat. Behind the intense exterior is a loyal, deeply bonded companion who will fiercely protect its home and thrive when given purpose and direction.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Screen for hip dysplasia, deafness (common in double merles), and hereditary eye disorders. Routine vet care is essential for long-term health.
Grooming
Very low-maintenance coat. Weekly brushing to remove loose hair. Clean ears and maintain dental care. Minimal shedding.
Exercise
Requires vigorous daily activity—running, working, hiking, or dog sports. Without it, Catahoulas can become restless and destructive.
Training
Extremely smart but independent. Requires strong, confident leadership and early socialization. Not ideal for homes without training experience.
Nutrition
Feed a high-protein, balanced diet for active, medium-to-large dogs. Adjust portions to maintain ideal weight and muscle condition.
