Canaan Dog

HEIGHT
19-24 inches
WEIGHT
35-55 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-15 years
Information

Canaan Dogs are intelligent, clean, and naturally wary of strangers. Early and ongoing socialization is essential to prevent excessive suspicion or reactivity. They’re independent thinkers—not defiant, but not eager to please like some breeds—so patient, consistent training is a must.

Their short, weather-resistant coat is low-maintenance, and they are generally very clean dogs. Canaan Dogs are known for excellent health and hardiness, but they need daily mental and physical activity to stay well-balanced and content.

Overview

The Canaan Dog is one of the oldest known dog breeds, originating in the Middle East as a pariah and guardian dog for nomadic tribes. Still semi-wild in parts of Israel, the breed was later standardized and trained for military and service work, valued for its vigilance, adaptability, and resilience.

Medium-sized, squarely built, and naturally athletic, the Canaan Dog is highly aware of its surroundings and excels as a watchdog. It’s not overly aggressive, but it is naturally cautious and territorial, making it a devoted and protective family companion in the right hands.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
A robust and naturally healthy breed. Screen for hip dysplasia and monitor eyes with age. Routine vet care is typically sufficient.
Grooming
Very low maintenance. Weekly brushing is usually enough. Seasonal shedding occurs but is manageable with regular grooming.
Exercise
Needs daily walks, free running in safe areas, or mentally engaging play. Easily bored without stimulation.
Training
Smart and observant but independent. Needs confident, respectful leadership. Responds best to consistency and positive reinforcement.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet suited for medium-sized, active breeds. Adjust portions to maintain lean body condition and prevent overfeeding.
