Broholmer

HEIGHT
27-29 inches
WEIGHT
90-150 pounds
LIFE SPAN
8-11 years
Information

Broholmers are intelligent and eager to please, but due to their size and strength, early training and socialization are essential. They are naturally protective but not aggressive, and tend to be reserved with strangers. Firm, consistent, but kind training works best.

The short coat is easy to maintain, though regular grooming helps manage seasonal shedding. The breed is generally healthy but, like many large dogs, can be prone to joint issues and bloat. Broholmers do best in homes with space—physically and emotionally—and should not be left isolated for long periods.

Overview

The Broholmer has roots going back to the Middle Ages in Denmark, where it was originally used for guarding estates and tracking large game. The breed nearly disappeared after WWII but was revived through careful breeding efforts, and today it’s treasured as a gentle giant with a steady temperament.

Massive and muscular, the Broholmer resembles a classic mastiff in form but carries itself with a calm, watchful presence. Despite its size, it’s affectionate, patient, and great with children—though its guarding instincts remain strong. The breed thrives in calm, experienced homes with room to move and confident leadership.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Monitor for hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as bloat (gastric torsion) and heart issues. Regular vet checks and weight control are key.

Moderate activity needs—daily walks and light play are enough. Avoid overexertion during growth stages to protect joints.
Training
Calm and steady learners. Early socialization and basic obedience are essential. Responds best to firm, consistent leadership with positive reinforcement.
