Brazilian Terrier

HEIGHT
13-16 inches
WEIGHT
15-22 pounds
LIFE SPAN
12-14 years
Information

Brazilian Terriers are very intelligent and quick learners but have the typical terrier independence. They excel in obedience and agility when properly trained but need consistent boundaries from an early age. Without enough activity and structure, they can become vocal or destructive.

Their short, smooth coat is very low-maintenance, and they shed only moderately. These dogs form strong bonds with their families and often do well with older children, but their high prey drive means care should be taken around smaller pets.

Overview

The Brazilian Terrier (Terrier Brasileiro) is one of only a few native Brazilian dog breeds. It was developed from crossing European terriers brought by immigrants—such as the Jack Russell and Fox Terrier—with local dogs to create a versatile farm companion capable of hunting vermin and guarding property.

This breed is lively, clever, and highly athletic. Compact but strong, it has a short tricolor coat, expressive eyes, and a docked or natural tail. Brazilian Terriers are naturally curious and thrive in homes that offer daily stimulation, structure, and companionship.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
A hardy and healthy breed overall. Maintain regular vet care and monitor joints, especially in very active dogs. Dental hygiene is important.
Grooming
Low grooming needs. Weekly brushing to remove dead hair, occasional baths, and basic hygiene (nails, ears, teeth).
Exercise
Requires daily exercise—walks, play, or dog sports. Without mental and physical outlets, may become bored and misbehave.
Training
Very smart, but with a terrier's independence. Early obedience training and consistent rules are essential. Responds well to positive reinforcement.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality diet for small to medium active breeds. Avoid overfeeding—these dogs can gain weight quickly without enough activity.
