Braque Saint Germain

HEIGHT

WEIGHT
40-60 pounds
LIFE SPAN
11-13 years
Information

Braque Saint-Germains are sociable, sensitive, and quick learners. They do best in homes where training is consistent yet kind, and where they can be involved in daily life. Their strong hunting instincts remain intact, so off-leash freedom should be limited to secure areas unless well-trained.

The breed’s short coat is easy to maintain, and they shed moderately. They’re generally healthy, though responsible breeding should include screening for joint and eye issues. Daily exercise and gentle structure help bring out this breed’s affectionate, cooperative nature.

Overview

The Braque Saint-Germain was developed in 19th-century France by crossing English Pointers with Continental pointing breeds, aiming to combine elegance with working ability. It quickly gained popularity as both a capable gundog and a charming household companion.

With its athletic build, expressive amber eyes, and classic white-and-orange coat, the breed is visually striking. Friendly and even-tempered, it bonds deeply with its humans and thrives in active, affectionate homes where it can participate in both play and purpose.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but monitor for hip dysplasia and inherited eye conditions. Regular ear cleaning helps prevent infections.

Needs daily walks or play sessions. Enjoys running and retrieving. Can adapt to calm home life with enough stimulation.
Training
Highly responsive and eager to please, but sensitive. Gentle, reward-based training works best. Early socialization encouraged.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet for medium-sized active breeds. Monitor weight to prevent stress on joints, especially during growth.
