Information

Boykin Spaniels are intelligent, enthusiastic, and quick learners. They respond well to positive reinforcement and enjoy both fieldwork and family life. While bred for hunting, they’re not overly intense and fit well into active households.

Their medium-length, slightly wavy coat ranges from chocolate to liver and requires weekly brushing to prevent mats, especially around the ears and chest. Many Boykins love to swim, so ear care is important to prevent infections. The breed is generally healthy but has some hereditary conditions to monitor.

Overview

The Boykin Spaniel is a true American original, developed in South Carolina in the early 1900s to hunt wild turkeys and waterfowl in tight, marshy terrain. Slightly larger than a Cocker Spaniel but smaller than many retrievers, the Boykin is compact, strong, and highly adaptable.

This breed is known for its cheerful nature, love of water, and strong retrieving instincts. Friendly with people and other dogs, Boykins are affectionate family companions who thrive on activity and engagement. They're always ready to work—or cuddle.
