Bloodhound

HEIGHT
23-27 inches
WEIGHT
80-110 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-12 years
Information

Bloodhounds are independent and driven by scent. Once on a trail, they can be nearly impossible to call off. Because of this, early training in recall, leash control, and impulse management is crucial. They’re generally great with children and other pets, thanks to their tolerant and friendly nature.

The breed’s distinctive facial features require regular cleaning—especially around the eyes and ears. Their coat is low-maintenance, but they drool a lot and can be messy eaters and drinkers. Bloodhounds do best in homes with fenced yards, space to roam, and people who appreciate their stubborn charm and deep baying voice.

Overview

The Bloodhound is one of the most iconic scent hounds in the world, renowned for its nearly supernatural ability to track scent trails over long distances—even days old. Originating in medieval France and developed further in England, the breed was once used to track game and later became essential for police and search-and-rescue work.

Easily recognized by its loose, wrinkled skin, long drooping ears, and soulful eyes, the Bloodhound is a gentle and affectionate family companion. Despite its laid-back personality indoors, it’s determined and focused when working. This breed is not for everyone—it follows its nose above all else and requires patient, experienced handling.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Watch for hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and chronic ear infections. Wrinkles should be kept clean and dry to prevent irritation or infection.
Grooming
Minimal brushing required. Clean facial folds, ears, and under eyes regularly. Be prepared for drool—on walls, clothes, and furniture.
Exercise
Enjoys long, scent-driven walks. Needs daily activity to stay healthy but isn't hyperactive. Secure yard is a must.
Training
Stubborn but not defiant. Responds well to positive reinforcement. Recall and leash training are critical due to intense scent drive.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet suited for large breeds. Monitor meal timing to reduce bloat risk. Keep weight in check to protect joints.
