Information

Black and Tan Coonhounds are independent thinkers with a strong prey drive. Early training and consistent recall work are essential due to their tendency to follow scents wherever they lead. Though they can be stubborn, they’re also affectionate and get along well with children and other dogs.

Their short, dense coat is easy to maintain, and they shed moderately. Long ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infections. Their large size and vocal nature may not be suited to apartment life, but they thrive in homes with space and opportunity for exploration.

Overview

The Black and Tan Coonhound was developed in the United States for hunting raccoons and other game at night. A cross between the Bloodhound and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound, it’s built for stamina, scent detection, and rugged terrain.

This breed is friendly, laid-back at home, but a determined and persistent tracker in the field. Known for its signature deep baying voice and long, velvety ears, the Black and Tan thrives in active households that understand the hound mindset—independent, scent-driven, and sometimes stubborn. With proper socialization and patience, it makes a gentle and loyal family companion.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Prone to hip dysplasia and ear infections due to long ears. Bloat (gastric torsion) is also a concern in deep-chested breeds.
Grooming
Minimal coat care—weekly brushing usually enough. Clean ears regularly and monitor for signs of irritation or odor.
Exercise
Enjoys long walks, tracking games, and off-leash time in secure areas. Needs daily activity but is generally calm indoors.
Training
Can be stubborn but food-motivated. Use positive reinforcement. Early recall training is essential due to scent-following instincts.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet appropriate for large, active breeds. Avoid heavy exercise around mealtime to help reduce bloat risk.
