Belgian Laekenois

HEIGHT
22-26 inches
WEIGHT
55-65 pounds
LIFE SPAN
10-12 years
Information

Belgian Laekenois dogs are extremely intelligent and eager to work, but can be reserved with strangers and dominant if not properly socialized. They need early exposure to different people, animals, and environments to ensure balanced behavior.

Their wiry, tousled coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting, especially around the beard and legs. Though not heavy shedders, they do lose hair seasonally. Training must be firm, consistent, and mentally engaging, as Laekenois are highly sensitive and quick to learn—yet easily bored.

They are not the right fit for novice owners or sedentary lifestyles, but in the right hands, they flourish as loyal, athletic, and responsive companions.

Overview

The Belgian Laekenois is one of four closely related Belgian Shepherd varieties and stands out with its rough, unkempt coat and intensely watchful gaze. Originally bred to guard linen drying in fields, this agile and intelligent herder has strong protective instincts and a deep bond with its family.

Though still rare outside Belgium, the Laekenois is gaining recognition for its work ethic, loyalty, and versatility. It excels in obedience, agility, and protection sports, but also makes a devoted household guardian—thriving in homes that offer structured training and lots of activity.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Screen for hip and elbow dysplasia. Also monitor for skin conditions and occasional genetic issues seen in herding breeds.
Grooming
Brush 1–2 times per week. Hand-stripping may be needed occasionally. Bathe only when necessary to protect natural coat oils.
Exercise
Needs vigorous daily activity—running, hiking, structured play, or dog sports. Without this, they can become destructive or anxious.
Training
Highly intelligent and task-oriented. Needs firm but fair training with mental stimulation. Early socialization is key to avoiding reactivity.
Nutrition
High-quality food suited to an active breed. Watch weight and support joint health with appropriate supplements if needed.
