WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN
12-14 years
Information

Basset Fauves are intelligent but have a strong prey drive and independent nature, typical of scent hounds. Early training and socialization help channel their curiosity into good manners. Recall can be a challenge due to their tendency to follow scent trails, so secure outdoor areas are best.

Their rough, dense coat is low-maintenance and dirt-resistant, needing only occasional brushing and minimal trimming. Health-wise, they are generally hardy but may face ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), or allergies. Regular vet care and weight management are key to long-term health.

Overview

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a short-legged scent hound originally bred in France for hunting small game like rabbit and hare. It descends from the larger Grand Fauve de Bretagne and was designed for working in dense brush and tough terrain. Despite its compact size, the breed is strong, confident, and built for stamina.

Lively and curious, the Basset Fauve is also affectionate and thrives in active homes. While it’s still used as a hunting companion in its homeland, this breed also makes a charming and manageable family pet. It does best with owners who enjoy the outdoors and offer routine exercise and companionship.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Check for eye health, monitor for ear infections, and maintain healthy weight to prevent joint strain.
Grooming
Brush weekly. Coat naturally resists dirt. Trim ears and nails regularly. Bathe occasionally.
Exercise
Enjoys long walks, sniffing games, and play. Secure garden or leash needed due to tracking instinct.
Training
Train early and consistently. Responds to rewards but may be headstrong. Work on recall and leash walking.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced small- to medium-breed formula. Avoid overfeeding—they’re prone to weight gain.
