Information

Barbado da Terceira dogs are highly trainable and love having a job—whether it's herding, obedience, or playing with their people. They're quick learners but need consistency and mental stimulation to avoid boredom. Their loyal and people-oriented nature makes them happiest when included in all aspects of family life.

The breed's wavy to curly coat requires moderate grooming—regular brushing and occasional trims to prevent tangles. While generally healthy, they may be predisposed to hip dysplasia, skin allergies, or eye conditions. Because of their rarity, responsible breeding and early vet screening are important.

Overview

The Barbado da Terceira is a medium-sized herding breed originating from Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal. Historically used to herd and guard livestock on rugged volcanic farmland, this dog is tough, athletic, and deeply bonded to its people. Only recently gaining recognition outside Portugal, the breed remains rare but admired for its versatility and personality.

With a rustic, shaggy coat and expressive face, the Barbado is an agile, intelligent, and eager companion that thrives in active households. It's great with children, quick to learn, and naturally protective, making it both a worker and a loyal family guardian.
